Hungarian Workers Protest Against Sunday Shopping
More than 200 retail workers protested against Sunday shopping in front of the Economy Ministry building on Sunday, in a demonstration organised by the Retail Workers Union (KASZ). They carried banners reading “We would like to go to a football match after mass,” “We spend too little time with our families,” and “Western work for Eastern wages”. The protesters also demanded twice the usual daily pay for working on Sundays.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on April 8 that there would be talks with unions, but he announced the decision on lifting restrictions on Sunday shopping on the following Monday without any consultations, the demonstrators underlined.

KASZ president József Sáling objected that the Sunday bonus pay wage has been cut from 100% of normal wages to 50%.
