Martin McDonagh’s multi-award winning play returns to Budapest English Theatre. Earlier in 2016, audiences were dazzled by this reading performance of The Pillowman. Winner of both the Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Play, from the pen of the acclaimed Martin McDonagh, this dark comedy may be his blackest ever.

A man is arrested and interrogated about his short stories… stories that bear a striking resemblance to a series of local child murders. He denies knowledge of the crimes, but is he innocent? Is it true, as he claims, that the only duty of a storyteller is to tell a story?

It is a challenging piece, but one close to the heart of director, Virginia Proud. “I’ve always wanted to do a McDonagh play, his writing is so intelligent, and he can summon sheer comedy from the blackest moments.” Two shows played to capacity audiences as part of BET’s Play Readings @ Brody Studios series earlier this year. The reception was so positive, that the team is taking the show for one more performance at RS9 + Vallai Kert to close the season on 17 June.

Proud says “The series was designed to showcase scripts that we love, in an intimate environment. All that’s missing is the set; otherwise the experience for the audience is the same, a committed performance, with a great audio visual backdrop. The Pillowman was perfect for this format, as it’s built around these passionate, terrible stories, told by the writer Katurian”

In BET’s production Katurian is played by Balázs Csémy, with Declan Hannigan and Peter Schueller as the interrogators, Tupolski and Ariel and András Balázs as his brother Michal. The technical design is by Izak Furstenberg.
