BBJ Editor Quits Under Political Pressure
Budapest Business Journal chief editor Tom Popper has announced that he has resigned due to pressure from the publisher to refrain from expressing any political opinion.

In particular, Popper said he was asked not to dwell on the refugee issue and the related referendum.

In a post on independent journalists website MediaPowerMonitor, Popper wrote: “It is hard to think of any news story coming out of Hungary that is more in need of news coverage,” as the referendum could be “the biggest blow to European unity since Brexit”.

However, last month he was “ordered” not to write about politics in the English-language bi-weekly’s editorial column, prompting his resignation.

The newspaper is published by Absolute Media, whose majority owner Rosairum Global is registered in Delaware, website 444 reports.
