Hungary Reprimanded In Strasbourg
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on Tuesday rejected an appeal in a case in which the first instance court admonished Hungary because in 2011 the authorities failed to thoroughly investigate presumably racist threats. The verdict became final yesterday.

The court in April acknowledged the complaint filed by a Roma woman and awarded her €4,000 in compensation and €3,717 in trial expenses against which the Hungarian state submitted an appeal.

The plaintiff had been insulted by four men passing by her courtyard during an anti-Roma march in the spring of 2011 in Gyöngyöspata. One of the men screamed at her and her child to go back into her house, swung an axe in her direction and threatened to build a house out of “Roma blood”.

The woman filed a criminal complaint but the Hungarian authorities terminated the proceedings.
