NVB Bans Opposition Rally
The National Election Committee (NVB) ruled yesterday that the Dialogue for Hungary party cannot hold a demonstration on Kossuth tér on Sunday, as that would be an election rally. Legislation bans election-related rallies on polling day.

In defiance, Dialogue co-president Gergely Karácsony said his party will challenge the ruling at the Kúria and will go ahead with the gathering on Sunday.

Dialogue has convened the rally entitled Stand up for a Hungary Free from Violence for October 2, the day of referendum.

The NVB ruling, by nine votes to three, upholds objections filed by Fidesz vice-president Gergely Gulyás.

In response, the Socialist Party called off its family day planned for Vörösmarty tér for Sunday, in solidarity with Dialogue.

Instead, the party said it will organise a rally outside the NVB offices on Saturday morning, to protest against “Fidesz’s manipulation of electoral bodies” and the torpedoing of opposition referendum initiatives.
