Police Officers Convicted Of Assault
The Capital Court of Appeals on Friday upheld a lower court’s conviction of three policemen on charges of physical assault in Hatvan. Two were demoted and received suspended prison terms, while the third received an 18-month jail sentence.

Two of the officers repeatedly struck handcuffed suspects who had been caught stealing corn. One of the victims suffered a fractured rib as a result of a kick.

Helsinki Committee lawyer Gábor Gyõzõ said there is no doubt that his clients had committed a misdemeanour, but he found it particularly serious that the policemen had injured handcuffed people who had put up no resistance.
