Sanitation Authority Orders Poultry Cull Around Bird Flu Areas

Hungarian food safety authority Nébih has ordered all poultry in the near vicinity of avian influenza outbreaks in Bugac and Kiskunmajsa, in southeastern Hungary, to be culled. Nébih ordered the cull in a 1km radius around the outbreak sites after discovering the virus in poultry near Kiskunmajsa.
The measure will affect tens of thousands of birds, whose owners will be compensated by the state.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that the risk of infection from the H5N8 strain of the bird flu virus could last until next spring.
