Coronavirus: Where Expats In Hungary Can Get Advice From Authorities
Updated: You can call the Hungarian government’s dedicated coronavirus hotline on +36 80 277 455 or +36 80 277 456 if you believe you have symptoms - ask for an English speaking operator.

Updated official advice and information is available online from the dedicated Hungarian government website (in Hungarian / English): https://koronavirus.gov.hu.

Latest - 4 May 2020:

In the next phase of the containment effort, from Monday, 4 May life in the countryside can be resumed through the gradual lifting of restrictions, according to a strict timetable, Government Spokesperson Alexandra Szentkirályi said.

In Budapest and Pest County, due to the high number of coronavirus infections and fatalities, the current restrictions will remain in effect.

For instance, the same as before, members of the public will not be allowed to use the gardens and terraces of restaurants, and only food stores, stores selling hygiene products and pharmacies will be allowed to stay open as normal; other shops will have to close at 3.00 p.m.

At the same time, from Monday (4 May 2020) in the countryside shopping centres will be allowed to operate according to their normal opening hours.

Those living in Budapest and Pest County will only be allowed to leave their homes for essential reasons.

They are advised against travelling to the countryside, meaning that they are not allowed to go to bathing resorts in the countryside and cannot use playgrounds, she added.

Throughout the country, the shopping time slot between 9.00 a.m. and 12.00 p.m. reserved for the elderly will remain in effect, and events will be banned until 15 August, with the exception of funerals, weddings and church events.

Bigger weddings also qualify as larger-scale events, meaning that they cannot be held until mid-August.

Earlier:

The Hungarian PM announced that all borders are closed to foreigners between 17 March -  11 April, with only foreign residents who have 'immediate Hungarian family' members, as well as Hungarian citizens, allowed to enter the country.

Therefore entry of most non-Hungarians into the country is banned but there are a few exceptions:

When families travel together, if at least one of the parties is a Hungarian citizen, the foreign family member - child, parent, grandparent, husband or wife - is permitted to enter Hungary.

Foreign nationals coming from an EEA country - EU inc. UK, Switzerland, Norway - who hold permanent residency and who have a permanent residence card will be treated in the same way as Hungarians.

Hungary has not restricted international flights though this could change at short notice, and Budapest International Airport remains open with various airlines continuing to operate international flights.

While cinemas, theatres, pubs, nightclubs, museums, restaurants, cafes and most non-food shops are closed, many pharmacies, drug stores, workplaces, and supermarkets remain open - some with reduced hours compared to normal times.

Universities, schools and nurseries are closed, however public transport is still running but with reduced services.

Expats who wish to leave Hungary are advised to make related arrangements asap due to the quickly changing circumstances.

Budapest is increasingly under the spotlight as a nexus for intelligence operations in Central Europe. Multiple recent allegations, diplomatic rows, and investigative reports point toward Hungary’s capital playing a more active role in espionage - whether by foreign powers operating under diplomatic cover, Hungarian agencies themselves, or as a site where East-West intelligence contests converge.
