Breaking news in English from state run M1, the oldest television broadcaster in Hungary.

M1 is managed and primarily funded by MTVA, a government organization formed in 2011. The creation of MTVA and transfer of public media into it has been frequently criticised by NGO's as being politically motivated, intended to the lessen the independence of public service media in Hungary. The government said restructuring was necessary to improve the finances of the public media system, and that all of the organizations within MTVA retain editorial independence.

Public Holidays & Long Weekends in Hungary in 2026

The official list of holidays, rest days, and extra workdays for 2026 has been published in the Magyar Közlöny. The decree also specifies which weekends will require work and which weekdays will become rest days. Expect several four-day and three-day long weekends again this year, according to RSM Hungary.

Hungary has vetoed the European Union's four-year higher education strategy, Balazs Hanko, the minister of culture and innovation, said in Brussels on Thursday, adding that Hungary made clear that only once Hungarian students are restored their rightful access to the Erasmus programme will Hungary approve the higher education strategy.

Union: 'Christian Culture' Ideology in Hungarian Kindergartens 'Unacceptable'.

The PDSZ teacher union has slammed what it called "ideological interference" in kindergarten education "under the pretext of Christian culture" as "unacceptable", emphasising that kindergarten education "cannot be a venue for political propaganda or religious conversion".
