Summer Clean Of Lake Balaton Underway
Dredging began in the western part of Lake Balaton last week, in response to the increased chlorophyll-A and algae content in the water.

Recently, the accredited laboratory of the Central Transdanubia Water Directorate measured significantly high levels of chlorophyll-A.

The necessary machines are provided by subcontractors, and the phosphorus-rich sediment will be stored in the area next to the pier in Balatongyörök.

Two more dredgers will soon be in operation in the western basin of the lake.

The machines will work as long as authorities deem it justified on the basis of continuous monitoring.

The development of water blooms cannot be predicted in advance, as the appearance of algal blooms is significantly influenced by the weather.

The dredging works do not affect the use of the beaches.

When people think of Europeans migrating abroad, they often imagine sunny destinations with Mediterranean beaches in Southern Europe. Indeed, countries such as Portugal and Spain remain very popular. Yet for my fellow Dutch countrymen, Hungary is increasingly becoming a preferred destination as well. This must be for different reasons, as Hungary — being landlocked — is hardly known for its beaches.
