Karácsony Loses Support In Budapest, DK Pushes Forward, Survey Shows

The Democratic Coalition (DK) has taken over the lead among Budapest voters advocating an alliance of opposition parties, a survey by the Századvég Foundation published on Tuesday showed.

Since February 2020 ex-premier Ferenc Gyurcsány’s DK has increased its backing from 21 to 30% among opposition voters in the capital.

The biggest loser of the period is the Momentum party whose backing in Budapest has shrunken from 34 to 22%, Századvég said.

Were the elections held next Sunday, 7% of opposition voters would cast their ballot for the Socialist-Párbeszéd alliance, and 6% for LMP and Jobbik each. (The corresponding figures for February 2020 were 6, 5 and 7%, respectively.)

In parallel with DK’s surge, support for Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, of the Socialist-Párbeszéd alliance, has dwindled.

Fifty percent of respondents said they would like to see another politician at the helm of Budapest while 38% would retain him in this post.

Half of those asked said that Karácsony’s predecessor, István Tarlós of Fidesz, had governed the city more effectively while 40% held the opposite view, the survey showed.
