Eliminating Fatal Road Accidents in Budapest Appealed for by Mayor
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony on Monday called for eliminating fatal road accidents in the capital after the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a car in a tram stop over the weekend

“I adhere to the principle of zero tolerance on this matter,” Karácsony said on Facebook after discussing road safety with Budapest police chief Tamás Terdik, adding that eliminating fatal road accidents in Budapest was a realistic goal.

All signs point to speeding having been the main factor in Sunday’s accident, Karácsony said. He said the installation of speed cameras around the capital could help with penalising and preventing speeding.

The primary task in this respect falls to the police, but the Budapest public roads manager must also contribute, the mayor said, adding that the city council will accelerate cooperation between the two entities.

A road safety strategy has also been prepared and consultations on it with professional organisations are ongoing, Karácsony said.

Their opinions will be taken into account and the strategy will be unveiled later this week, he added.
