Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Budapest British International School
Over the last two years we have been focussing on how we can ensure the students in the Primary School are ‘future ready’. A lot of work has been done on rethinking and redesigning our curriculum to prepare students for MYP and DP programmes, but also for when they leave school.

Here are just some of the things that we have implemented:

  • Developed our ‘Curriculum Intent’ which puts students at the heart of the curriculum and where they feel empowered to share their opinions, shape their learning and have agency and choice

  • Established our ‘6Rs Learning Superpowers’ - adapted from the IB Learner Profile

  • In People and Places students are now learning through an inquiry based approach. We have 5 overarching themes throughout the year where the children explore learning which includes but is not limited to local, national, international, and intercultural learning experiences.

  • We have placed a stronger emphasis on practical and real world action, service and an understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • In ROOTS, children have been learning key life skills such as cooking, bike maintenance and use of design technology tools

  • Through Hungarian Culture the students have gained an understanding of the culture and language of their host country

With this emphasis on ‘future-focussed education’, the leadership team has been exploring the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for some time. The PYP is an example of best educational practice globally, responding to the challenges and opportunities facing young students in our rapidly changing world. It is a student-centred approach to education that reflects the best of educational research and experience derived from IB World Schools.

Based on the work we have already done and following our significant achievements amongst Secondary colleagues in gaining IB World status and authorisation for both the IB MYP and IB DP, we feel the time is right to move towards becoming an IB continuum school. We are very excited, therefore, to announce the plans to work towards BBIS gaining candidacy and then, in time, authorisation of the IB PYP.

Having all 3 programs running at BBIS will be invaluable in shaping a consistent environment with transferability and continuity of learning from Primary into Secondary. Whilst some of the descriptions of learning activities within the PYP is different to how we describe things now, it is understandably closer to the MYP and DP, and given that many of the things we already do match with the PYP standards and practices, gaining authorisation will provide a fantastic next step as we continue to build on our successes.

We have put together a timeline which aims to achieve authorisation by the beginning of the 2024/25 academic year. Upon authorisation, BBIS would become the first IB continuum school in Hungary.
