Organised by the Budapest Sport Office (BSI), the 41st edition of the event has reached full capacity for both the 21.1-kilometre half marathon and the 10-kilometre race.

Runners have registered from around 1,200 Hungarian towns and cities, underlining the event’s growing national as well as international appeal.

The field includes around 8,500 participants from abroad, with the half marathon attracting particularly strong international interest.

The scale of the event means the start itself is expected to take almost 50 minutes as thousands of runners make their way onto the course.

The race will begin at the Pázmány Péter sétány in District XI, with the route taking runners along some of Budapest’s most recognisable riverside and central locations.

The course includes sections of the Buda and Pest river embankments, the Árpád Bridge area, Margaret Island, Fővám tér, Szabadság Bridge, Szent Gellért tér and the Buda Castle area, before returning to the starting and finishing area.

Traffic Disruption Details 

For Budapest residents and visitors, the event will also mean significant temporary traffic restrictions on Sunday.

According to the Budapest Police, the Budai and Pesti lower embankments will be closed for several hours, while temporary and phased closures will affect roads and bridges along the race route. Szabadság Bridge and Szent Gellért tér will also be closed between 8:55am and 2pm.

Further restrictions will affect parts of Bem rakpart, Fő utca, Clark Ádám tér, the Chain Bridge area, Széchenyi István tér and other roads along the route. Pázmány Péter sétány will already be closed from Saturday morning through Sunday evening, while additional restrictions will be introduced from early Sunday morning.

Anyone driving into central Budapest on Sunday should therefore allow extra time and check current traffic and public transport information before setting off. The police advise motorists to pay particular attention to the temporary changes, while roads are expected to reopen progressively after the runners have passed.

Despite the disruption, the record turnout is expected to create a lively international atmosphere across the capital, with thousands of runners passing some of Budapest’s best-known landmarks during the race.
