Upgraded Public Bicycle Sharing in Budapest Launches with E-Bikes

Budapest launched on Monday an upgraded version of a bicycle-sharing scheme it operates with the support of Hungarian oil and gas company MOL.

MOL Bubi 3.0 has better quality bicycles, complemented by e-bikes, and a bigger fleet, while the MOL Bubi application is easier to use, Mayor Gergely Karacsony said.

Budapest Transportation Centre (BKK) deputy-CEO Adam Bodor said MOL Bubi 3.0 would launch with 2,000 bicycles, including 500 e-bikes. He added that the fleet would be expanded "very quickly" to 3,300 with 800 e-bikes.

The scheme's new operator is Inurba Mobility, which runs similar programmes in a total of six countries, elsewhere in Europe as well as in South America.

Inurba Mobility has a five-year contract to run the scheme.

By 2027, the MOL Bubi fleet size is expected to grow to 5,000.

Users of the previous MOL Bubi system will need to download the new app and create a new account, as existing registrations and subscriptions are not transferred automatically. 

The app can be used to locate nearby bikes, check the battery level of e-bikes and unlock bicycles by scanning a QR code.

The new pricing model starts at HUF 2,500 a month for a standard pass, with a discounted HUF 2,000 monthly fee for BudapestGO pass holders. 

An introductory HUF 4,500 monthly pass covers both conventional bikes and e-bikes, while occasional users can simply pay HUF 60 per minute without taking out a subscription.

The addition of electric-assist bikes is expected to make cycling a more practical option for longer journeys and for travelling through hillier districts in Buda, encouraging more residents and visitors alike to choose cycling for everyday trips.
