The Ministry of Transport and Communications launched a competition in July, to design the new museum near the planned BMW plant on the M35 motorway, with almost Ft 95 million in prizes for the top three entries in the open, secret, one-round competition.
Proposals are expected by midday on September 13.
Minister of Transport János Lázár announced in May that the museum would be moved to Debrecen, citing economic benefits.
At the time, the minister said the cabinet had discussed in a first reading the ministry’s proposal to build the Ft 150 billion project somewhere near the future BMW factory.
However, former Transport Museum director Dávid Vitézy criticised the move, highlighting Budapest’s larger population and tourist industry.
Vitézy remarked that the Ft 8 billion spent in recent years to prepare the relocation of the museum to a new building planned for Budapest’s 10th District will be wasted if the museum moves to Debrecen.
