A highlight of any visit to the Tokaj region is a visit to the charming and fascinating little Swabian village of Hercegkút, and its unique cellar system.
The Swabians, who arrived here in the 18th century from Germany's Black Forest, played a pivotal role in shaping viticulture in Hercegkút. The wine produced in this region was traditionally matured and stored in barrels within the cave cellars of Gomboshegy and Kőporos, carved into the rhyolite tufa on the village's outskirts.
Among these, cellar 92 of Gomboshegy and cellar 87 of Kőporos are designated World Heritage sites and stand as remarkable examples of folk architecture. Their hillside locations, marked by iconic triangular entrances, are visible from the town and nearby areas, evoking imagery of hobbit homes.
Towering above the Gomboshegy cellar row is Kálvária Hill, where visitors can follow a sacred path leading to a peaceful chapel. From its summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the town and the distant Zemplén Mountains.
In the delightful village, the Kőporos cellars exude a truly authentic charm. Scattered throughout Hercegkút, numerous passionate local winemakers warmly welcome visitors to savor their exceptional Tokaj wines, making it a paradise for wine enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
