'Zen' Live Painting by Zeus Salas at The Workshop Budapest on 10 February
On the night the world enters the auspicious and extraordinary year of the Dragon, February 10, Venezuelan artist-performer Zeus Salas spreads 12 white canvases in the gallery space of The Workshop and invokes the symbolism of Chinese astrology to paint portraits of the 12 zodiac signs in gold, red, white, and black.

Legend has it that when Buddha summoned all the animals before he departed from earth, only 12 animals came to bid him farewell, and as a reward, he named a year after each animal in the order in which they arrived.

Each of these animals – Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig – represents how we are perceived by others as well as how we portray ourselves to the world. Or as the Chinese say, “This is the animal that hides in your heart.”

As such, an animal, like the painting, is a window into the world through which we establish our personalities, develop our prospects in work and love, and shape our future good (or bad) luck.

During The Workshop’s social gathering, Zeus not only allows attendees to observe the act of creation and become inherently part of the artworks, but he also invites them to find their own characters on the painted 66x66cm canvases and celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Dragon on this magical evening in a self-identical, harmonious, but at the same time bohemian atmosphere, enchanted by the call of abundance.

The 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs

Rat: ambitious, charming, private
Ox: diligent, gentle, reliable
Tiger: confident, brave, magnetic, arrogant
Rabbit: kind, sensitive, artistic, timid
Dragon: outspoken, energetic, generous
Snake: clever, curious, alluring
Horse: amusing, enthusiastic, independent
Sheep: easygoing, empathic, creative
Monkey: entertaining, intelligent, secretive
Rooster: adventurous, charitable, funny
Dog: helpful, honest, unselfish, anxious
Pig: caring, generous, smart, impatient

Guests will be able to bid on the 12 artworks in  a silent auction, and thus become owners of their own characters and transform their participation in a once-in-a-lifetime event into an experiential investment.
