Hungary is a World Leader in Use of Solar Energy
In 2024, solar panels accounted for a quarter of domestic electricity production, the highest rate not only in Europe but also in the entire world. The year before last, Hungary was in third place behind Chile and Greece in this comparison.

According to a recent report by the independent international think tank Ember, with Hungary's share increasing to 25 percent, Hungary surpassed both countries last year - the Ministry of Energy drew attention to this in a post published on its official Facebook page.

Among those with production above 5 terawatt hours, only the other two top countries (Chile and Greece, respectively, with 22 percent) and Spain (21 percent) have a solar energy share above 20 percent.

The authors note that the two leaders in the world ranking were able to show a share of less than 2 percent ten years ago.

The analysts' comparison in January also revealed that Hungary has produced the highest growth rate in Europe in the past five years, up from just 4 percent in 2019.

"Along with the Netherlands, we can also boast that last year, solar power plants covered more than 80 percent of domestic electricity demand for more than seventy days during peak production periods".

The ministry reminds us that the previous report highlighted that compared to 2023, this shows substantial progress, especially in the case of our country, as only 10 such days were registered before last year.

Around 7,800 megawatts of solar energy capacity was established in Hungary by the spring of 2025. Four-fifths of the existing installed capacity has been in operation since 2020.

From 2022, domestic solar capacity increased by at least 1,200 megawatts in three consecutive years, the ministry concluded.

The future belongs to green energy. The benefits of clean electricity generation can only be fully realized if they are complemented by adequate storage capabilities and renewable alternatives that are not dependent on the weather or time of day gain ground.

The government recently supported the establishment of corporate energy storage facilities and the increased utilization of geothermal heat and biogas-biomethane in the Jedlik Ányos Energy Program, they wrote.

Hungary is set to have the largest green energy storage capacity in the world by 2030, after China, the US and Germany, a government official said, also noting that its climate protection plan announced in 2020 set the goal of producing 90% of the country’s electricity from green, carbon dioxide-neutral sources by 2030.
