LIWO Group Hungary Insight: European Parliament Backs Simpler EU Chemicals Rules

Clearer Rules for Industry and Consumers
The European Parliament has formally endorsed the Chemicals Omnibus VI package during a plenary session in May 2026, paving the way for negotiations with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, the European Cleaning Journal reports.
According to the original announcement from industry association A.I.S.E., the package is designed to simplify the EU’s Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation without lowering safety standards.
The decision reflects growing political support for legislation that is easier for both businesses and consumers to understand and apply.
Focus on Practical Labelling
A key driver behind the reform is the recognition that current CLP implementation and formatting requirements can be difficult to apply in real-world situations — particularly for smaller packaging formats and products sold across multiple language markets.
The proposed simplification measures are expected to improve label readability for consumers, while also helping companies reduce unnecessary packaging waste and avoid excessive regulatory costs across supply chains.
For the facility management and cleaning sectors, the changes could support more efficient compliance processes and clearer communication around product safety.
Industry Welcomes the Vote
Alexis Van Maercke, Director General of A.I.S.E., welcomed the outcome of the vote. He said the Parliament had acknowledged that some existing CLP rules were “no longer fit for purpose” and required updating to remain effective in practice.
Van Maercke also stressed the importance of realistic implementation timelines for manufacturers of detergents, cleaning products, disinfectants and maintenance solutions, adding that clearer rules are essential for compliance, consumer understanding and sustainable product development.
Next Stage of Negotiations
Following the plenary vote, the European Parliament will now begin interinstitutional negotiations with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to finalise the legislative package.
The result signals continued momentum towards a more streamlined and practical EU chemicals framework — one that balances regulatory efficiency with environmental and health protection.
