Carmelite Monastery & Cabinet Office in Budapest to Open for Public on Saturday
The Carmelite Monastery and the Cabinet Office in Budapest will again be open to the public again on Saturday. Last weekend some 2,000 people attended guided tours through the offices of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Antal Rogan, his cabinet chief.

Minister Vitézy said the places last week had been snatched up within minutes, and they decided "to offer an opportunity to anyone to have a look at the prime minister's study, the balcony, the cigar room and the famed belvedere."

He added that the programme could also be extended to the weekends beyond.

Reservations can be made at szabadkarmelita.hu

The Carmelite Monastery (Karmelita kolostor in Hungarian) is a historic building complex located in Budapest’s Castle District (Buda Castle), a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Originally built as a church for the Franciscan order in the 13th century, it was later converted into a monastery for the Carmelite friars in the late 18th century under Emperor Joseph II.

Following its secularization, the complex served various cultural purposes for over two centuries, notably housing the National Dance Theatre. Then after a major architectural renovation, the complex assumed a new high-profile role, serving as the official office of the Prime Minister of Hungary.

Parts of the historic complex will be periodically open to the public for guided cultural tours and architectural visits.
