Analysis: More Applications for Higher Education in Hungary than Ever
All previous records have been broken, the number of applicants to Hungarian higher education has never been so high, considering the general and supplementary admission procedures together, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM) announced in a press statement to MTI.

16,500 people submitted their applications to Hungarian universities and colleges during the supplementary admissions process.

This year, there was an opportunity to submit supplementary admission applications at 44 universities and colleges; you could apply for one major at one institution.

Medical, IT and technical training fields, as well as economics and teacher training, were also popular among applicants.

"It is particularly pleasing that 57 percent of applicants chose a field of study that is important from a national economic and labor market perspective. These include, among others, IT, engineering, agricultural, medical and health sciences, natural science majors, and teacher training. We have built a competitive, attractive, identity-preserving, and community-building higher education system, and the results of the supplementary admissions provided further evidence of this," he announcement quotes Veronika Varga-Bajusz, State Secretary responsible for higher education, vocational and adult training.

35 percent of the additional applicants indicated a state scholarship program.

Three-quarters of the applicants would like to enroll in a bachelor's program, and 15 percent applied for a master's program.

The proportion of those choosing church-run institutions continued to increase during the supplementary admissions process: 19 percent of applicants applied to a church university or college.

65 percent of applicants chose one of the renewed institutions, and 9 percent would like to continue their studies at a state university.

The score limits are expected to be announced on August 27, so prospective students who are successful in the supplementary admissions will be able to begin their studies in their chosen major in September.

Roma can only become middle-class if backed by an intellectual class, Attila Sztojka, the state secretary for relations with the Roma minority, said at a ceremonial event on Saturday. "While other countries are still looking for excuses, Hungary has set an example for Europe, since here we are raising a new group of Roma intellectuals" true to its roots, he said.
