Restrictions on Foreign Guest Workers in Hungary to be Reviewed Soon
- 19 May 2026 5:28 AM
Prime Minister Peter Magyar has asked the economy and energy minister and the social and family affairs minister to coordinate a discussion of the issue of work permits to non-EU nationals with the relevant ministries, Anita Kobol said at a press briefing after a cabinet meeting.
The aim is for guest workers to serve the needs of Hungarian businesses and to prevent the emergence of an economic model reliant on mass employment of guest workers, she added.
The government is expected to take a decision on the matter at a cabinet meeting in the coming week, Kobol said.
The prime minister has instructed Zoltan Tanacs, the science and technology ministry, to undertake a probe of a research and talent fostering foundation headed by Nobel Prize-winner Ferenc Krausz by the end of May and prepare to cancel HUF 261.7bn in financing contracts it has with the state, Kobol said.
The government expects close to HUF 20bn already transferred to the foundation to be repaid, she added.
