Big Green Investment by Iconic Herend Porcelain in Hungary via Factory Rescue Programme
Herend Porcelain Manufactory inaugurated HUF 742m of energy efficiency upgrades at its base in Herend (W Hungary) on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement.

The investment was supported by HUF 293m from the Factory Rescue Programme, which the government launched after the start of the war in Ukraine to reduce companies' dependence on foreign energy markets, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said at the ceremony.

The investment has cut the company's annual gas consumption by 40,000 cubic metres and is preserving 600 jobs, he added.

Around 90pc of Herend's output is exported.

More About Herend Porcelain in Hungary

For expats arriving in Hungary, one name you’ll quickly come across in shops, museums, or even diplomatic settings is Herend - a company that blends craftsmanship, history, and a touch of luxury.

Founded in 1826 in the village of Herend, near Lake Balaton, the manufactory has grown into one of the world’s most respected producers of hand-painted porcelain.

What makes Herend truly special is that every piece is still made and decorated by hand, using techniques passed down through generations. This means no two items are exactly the same - even within the same pattern.

Herend first gained international recognition in the 19th century, supplying fine porcelain to European aristocracy, including the Habsburg court.

Today, its intricate designs — from delicate floral motifs to more elaborate, colourful patterns - are exported worldwide and often given as official state gifts.

For expats, Herend offers an interesting window into Hungarian culture.

While the brand represents tradition and heritage, it’s not stuck in the past.  This traditional Hungarian company continues to evolve, like this investment in energy-efficient upgrades to modernise production while maintaining its artisanal roots.

If you’re interested to see and know more, visiting the Herend Porcelain Museum or factory is well worth the trip - you’ll see firsthand how these iconic pieces are created, from shaping the clay to the final brushstroke.

In short, Herend is more than porcelain in Hungary - it’s a symbol of quality local craftsmanship, artistic elegance, and pride that has stood the test of time.
