Inspiring Force: Kocsis Archive Established in Budapest by Music Forum Foundation
- 1 Apr 2026 6:25 AM
It is our responsibility to pass on to future generations everything Zoltan Kocsis created," said Anita Kiss-Hegyi, state secretary for cultural relations, at a press conference at the Budapest Music Centre (BMC) on Tuesday.
Kocsis, she added, was not only a part of Hungarian and global music history but a defining and inspiring force whose work must be made accessible for study and exploration.
The processing of the estate, led by music historian Janos Macsai, is already under way.
Laszlo Goz, director of the BMC, revealed that the archive contains four lorry loads of documents, recordings, and records. The Kocsis family -- his son and widow -- played a crucial role in facilitating the transfer of the estate to the foundation.
Goz noted that the Music Forum Foundation, founded 16 years ago by Gyorgy Kurtag, Marta Kurtag, and Gyorgy Kurtag Jr, has previously overseen projects like the creation of kurtag.hu and composer competitions. Now, its work continues with the Kocsis legacy.
While the foundation has been housed at the BMC, it will soon move to its own premises at 5 Ligeti Gyorgy Street, where, alongside the Kocsis Archive, a broader archive for Hungarian composers and performing artists will also be established.
This will preserve and organise the estates of composers such as Zoltan Jeney, Jozsef Sari, and Laszlo Vidovszky.
Macsai noted that Kocsis's estate includes personal items such as passports, school certificates, family photo album, as well as thousands of hours of audio and video recordings, a near-complete sheet music collection, including first editions and manuscripts, a unique collection of 78-rpm records, some 5,000 music-related books, and the artist's correspondence, diaries, and official documents.
The archive's creation was supported by the Ministry of Culture and Innovation.
