New Trademark for High-Quality, Locally-Sourced Products in Hungary to be Rolled Out
- 24 Mar 2026 1:17 PM
The Agriculture Ministry and food safety authority Nébih are working together on the initiative, which was announced by Agriculture Minister István Nagy at a farm fair in Gelej in north-east Hungary.
Nagy said the new designation system will follow the model of the existing “Kiváló Minőségű Élelmiszer” (KMÉ) label, expanding it with a stronger emphasis on guaranteed Hungarian origin as well as quality.
The aim is to create a simple, recognisable symbol that assures shoppers a product is genuinely Hungarian — from production through to processing — while maintaining high standards.
Officials say the new label is designed to strengthen consumer trust and transparency. When shoppers see the mark, they should immediately know the product reflects Hungarian expertise, local sourcing, and reliable quality.
The move also fits into a broader effort to encourage more conscious food choices, supporting local farmers, shortening supply chains, and keeping more value within Hungary’s rural economy.
When successfully introduced, the trademark should become a familiar sight in Hungarian stores, helping expats easily choose food that is not only high quality, but truly local with clear related benefits for the environment and more.
