US Vice President Vance arrives in Hungary

US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, arrived in Hungary on an official visit on Tuesday morning.

The vice president, who arrived in Budapest on a two-day visit, was greeted at Liszt Ferenc International Airport with military honours by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

During the visit, Vance will hold talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orban before they will deliver speeches at a rally dubbed the Day of Hungarian-American Friendship at the MTK Sportpark.

Szijjarto: Vance visit signals new 'golden age' in Hungary-US ties

US Vice President JD Vance's visit to Hungary is yet another clear sign of the start of a new "golden age" in relations between Hungary and the United States, "which all Hungarians can benefit from", Petter Szijjarto, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said on Tuesday.

Speaking to public news channel M1 after the vice president's arrival in Budapest, Szijjarto noted that Vance's visit was the first by a US vice president to Hungary since 1991. It is also the highest-level visit by a US leader since 2006, he added.

"Relations and cooperation between the two countries have reached a completely different quality since [US President] Donald Trump's return to office," Szijjarto said. "There are practical signs of this as well, as all Hungarians and every Hungarian family stands to benefit from this cooperation."

"The presidential system in the US means that the personal relationship with the president is hugely important when it comes to bilateral cooperation," the minister said. "So [Prime Minister] Viktor Orban and Donald Trump's friendship has ushered in a new golden age in this respect."

He cited practical benefits, including Hungary's re-inclusion in the US ESTA visa-waiver programme and Trump's approval for Hungary to continue buying cheap Russian energy, which protected the regulated utilities price scheme. Without this, he said, households would be paying triple what they pay now for utilities.

Szijjarto warned that Europe was heading towards a "severe energy crisis", with looming oil and gas shortages and soaring prices. "But we Hungarians can shield ourselves from this if Eastern energy supplies remain," he said, contrasting Brussels' "ideological" energy policy with the US' "pragmatic approach".

Concerning energy cooperation between the two countries, Szijjarto noted record bilateral trade turnover in 2025, exceeding 10 billion US dollars, and 16 American investment projects worth 200 billion forints (EUR 522.2m).

"And this momentum isn't stopping, as bilateral trade turnover is up more than 50 percent so far this year, and in the last three weeks alone, we've announced six new US investments worth 100 billion forints," he added.

Szijjarto said the US vice president's schedule includes a small-group meeting at the Castle District premises of the Prime Minister's Office, followed by plenary talks with a wider delegation.

The topics on the agenda will include the future of Western civilisation, migration policy, family policy challenges, including "gender ideology", and global and European peace and security, "with Hungary being the only European Union member of the Board of Peace established by President Donald Trump", he said.

"And alongside the bigger issues facing Western civilisation, the two countries are working closely together on practical issues, such as economic and energy cooperation, which will also be on the agenda," Szijjarto said.

Szijjarto: Strategic cooperation ongoing between Hungary, US govts

Strategic cooperation is ongoing between the governments of Hungary and the United States in the economic and energy policy sectors, among other areas, Peter Szijjarto, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said on Tuesday, adding: "There is also continuous dialogue concerning the great issues of Western civilisation."

Speaking ahead of US Vice President JD Vance's two-day visit to Hungary, Szijjarto warned that Europe was "marching towards a very severe energy crisis" that could culminate in shortages of natural gas and crude oil, leading to a dramatic increase of energy prices.

"That is the result of an ideologically motivated, unreasonable energy policy in Brussels that banned Russian energy resources from the continent. By contrast, the US is pursuing a sensible energy policy and has recently lifted sanctions; [US President] Donald Trump also permitted Hungary to buy cheap Russian gas and oil," Szijjarto said, according to a ministry statement.

Without those measures, household utility prices in Hungary would have grown threefold, he said: "Energy cooperation between the US and Hungary is key to protecting energy security and the regulated utilities price scheme."

Economic cooperation between the two countries has similar significance, he said.

"Trade has never been as robust between the two countries as last year. The number of US investments arriving in Hungary last year also hit a record, and the momentum seems to last. This year, trade turnover is up 50 percent; we have announced six new investments in March alone, worth a total of 100 billion forints [EUR 261.1m]," he said.

"Strategic cooperation is ongoing, as is the dialogue on the great issues of Western civilisation such as family policy, global security and migration," he said, adding that the strategic cooperation would last.

PM's political director: Hungary, US agree in debate 'on future of West'

US Vice President JD Vance is visiting Hungary "at a time when the debate on Europe's future, security and identity is ongoing," the prime minister's political director said on Facebook on Tuesday, adding that Vance's stance on the matter "on several points aligns with the principles Hungary has been consistently representing" in that debate.

Balazs Orban hailed Vance's two-day visit to Hungary as "another milestone in the golden age of US-Hungary relations", noting that this was the first "official ... visit by a US vice president to Hungary since the regime change"; he was the highest-ranking US official to visit the country since President George W. Bush's trip in 2006, he added.

"Vance's words have particular weight in the debate on the future of the Western world, and he holds the view that Brussels has fatefully misguided Europe," Orban said.

Orban noted that in an earlier speech, Vance said: "The threat to Europe ... is not Russia, it's not China -- what I worry about is the threat from within." He said that imploding societies could not be safe, and that Europe was risking "civilisational suicide."

Orban said Vance had earlier sharply condemned "the oppressing power" in Brussels that he said placed liberal politics above the interests of Europeans.

Vance has also warned of "Brussels censorship" targeting conservative voices, of which Hungarian patriotic forces were also suffering on social media platforms, Orban said.

He cited Vance as saying that the problem was not people saying the wrong things but that governments were afraid to hear them. "Censorship is not strength. It is weakness," Orban cited Vance as saying.

The vice president also shares the Hungarian stance on migration, Orban said. According to Vance, mass migration without assimilation amounted to chaos, and no nation could survive without protecting its borders.

Orban said Vance's visit was significant not only as a diplomatic feat; it also signalled that voices calling for the primary importance of sovereignty and security were gaining strewngth in the transatlantic space.

Watch: Europe's Future on the Ballot in Hungary? Orbán in Tight Re-Election Race - FRANCE 24

Is Europe’s future on the ballot in Hungary? In Budapest, the US vice president is actively stumping for far-right incumbent Viktor Orban who trails in the polls ahead of Sunday’s general election. European politicians sometimes campaign for likeminded peers from neighbouring nations, but in this case, it is the United States openly taking aim at the bloc using the same talking points as Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
