European Investment Bank to be Far More Active in Hungary
Both the Hungarian government and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have reaffirmed their commitment to significantly increasing the bank's activity in Hungary and supporting far more projects, Finance Minister Andras Karman said on Facebook on Friday after hosting EIB Vice-President Marko Primorac for an introductory meeting.

Karman said that even at this first meeting, they had identified development areas where Hungary plans to attract funding in the coming period, and where the EIB can provide favourable resources. He added that discussions would continue to refine details and involve other ministries.

The minister noted that while the EIB has supported various projects in Hungary with low-cost loans, its activity had been scaled back in recent years alongside the decline in EU funding.

Following the change of government, both sides have now reaffirmed their commitment to increasing the EIB's activity in Hungary and supporting many more projects, he said.

Karman highlighted several priority areas already identified, all of which, he said, the Tisza government considered critical for development. These include renewable energy, social housing, health-care projects and railway development, he said.

He pointed out that the EIB is already highly active in these fields, adding that Hungary and the bank would seek specific opportunities for cooperation where development can be supported with preferential loans.
