Budapest Airport Ends Free Taxi Pick-Up Period
Passengers using Budapest Airport are due to see changes to taxi arrangements from early August, after the airport operator removes the five-minute free access period previously available to Budapest-registered taxis at Liszt Ferenc International Airport.

The Budapest Taxi Association has criticised the decision, warning that the new system could make airport transfers far less convenient for travellers.

The association said that because taxis will have to pay a fee each time they enter the airport pick-up and drop-off areas, some drivers may choose to use an alternative taxi parking area located around 1.1 kilometres from the main terminal building.

The association noted this could create practical difficulties for passengers, particularly those carrying luggage, travelling with children or elderly passengers, or arriving during busy periods. It has asked for the measure to be suspended while a solution acceptable to both sides is worked out.

Budapest Airport said the change is intended to create a fairer and more transparent system for all licensed transport providers using airport facilities.

The airport operator said the previous five-minute free access arrangement was an exception that applied only to Budapest-registered taxis, while other service providers were already required to pay fees to use the designated airport vehicle areas.

According to Budapest Airport, standardising the system will ensure that infrastructure usage costs are shared more equally among operators.

The company added that similar systems are already used at many international airports and are designed to support the efficient operation and maintenance of airport facilities.

The Budapest Taxi Association has called on the government, which owns an 80% stake in Budapest Airport, to encourage the airport operator to postpone the change until any necessary technical, regulatory and practical adjustments are made.

Budapest Airport rejected the request for a delay but said it remains open to discussions with taxi companies and is willing to fine-tune the new system if needed.

The impact on passengers will depend on how taxi operators adapt once the new rules take effect, including whether they continue using the terminal pick-up areas or introduce alternative arrangements.
