Autumn Launch Announced for Budapest-Belgrade Passenger Rail Link
Passenger services on the long-awaited upgraded Budapest-Belgrade railway can begin this autumn, provided final safety tests on the Hungarian section are completed successfully, Transportation and Investment Minister David Vitezy announced.

Vitezy said the new Hungarian government regards the completion of the cross-border railway as a strategic priority, despite having criticised aspects of how the Hungarian section of the project was implemented under the previous administration.

The modernised rail line is expected to significantly reduce journey times between Budapest and Belgrade, making train travel a more attractive alternative to driving. The route also forms part of a broader international transport corridor linking Central Europe with the Balkans.

For expats living in Hungary, the new rail service is expected to provide a convenient new way to explore neighbouring Serbia, making cross-border travel much easier for weekend breaks, business trips and also longer holidays.

Vitezy said the new railway will also support Serbia's European integration by improving transport connections with the EU.

Hungary and Serbia say they are continuing to coordinate closely to ensure the railway can begin carrying passengers as soon as all regulatory and safety requirements have been met.
