Hungarian Red Wine Scores Highest at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2026
- 18 Aug 2026 4:50 PM
There are less than a hundred wine estates around the world which have a wine that has received the highest score among its peers at any major international wine competitions, and it was declared and published.
As far as we know there is only one that has achieved that kind of success twice, and it is Jammertal Wine Estate. Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2021 Cassiopeia Merlot 2015, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2026 Koh – I - Noor Merlot 2018.

What is the secret of your vineyard for making your premium big reds?
Determination, talent, thorough work, and high financial risk-taking tendency. We should give full credit to our Chief Winemaker, Ms. Kövesdi, Zsófia.
What was your team's reaction to winning the top global trophy for a historic second time?
Well, what is the statistical chance that your wine would be given the highest average score by three dozen judges out of a couple of thousands of competitors once? And what is the statistical chance that you could repeat it?
Of course, first reaction was disbelief. Not because we thought we would not be good enough. Just because it is unbelievable that you could prove yourself by objective measures, blind tasting a second time to be the best in an utterly competitive global business.
What is your philosophy when choosing between Hungarian and French oak barrels for this vintage?
Merlot = French oak ( produced by Trust Hungary Szigetvár ). Decades of experience taught us this lesson. French oak has a different, more subdued aromatic profile than the Hungarian oak we use for other varieties.
How is the Jammertal Wine Estate vineyard run to maintain your elite level of quality?
Decades of experience of our vineyard manager, Mr. Nagy, Zsolt, expensive but necessary manual labor and hard determination to achieve the optimal ripeness of the grape which means extreme financial risks.
Where can expats in Hungary buy a bottle of this special 2018 Merlot before it sells out?
On our official website: jbb.hu or you are more than welcome to pay a visit to our wine estate in Villány ( Baross Gábor u. 108).
How long can wine lovers cellar this vintage, and when will it reach its peak?
This wine is still young but already at its full power. That is why we put emphasis on bottle aging, too. We never release any premium wines prematurely. So, enjoy it right now ! On the other hand, you may keep it for at least a decade longer. The only chance that you will have a 2018 vintage in 2036 if you buy it when it is available.
For expats hosting dinner parties, what dishes do you recommend pairing with this Merlot?
Anything but real spicy ( too much garlic, paprika / chili or onion ). Goes well both with fish and meat.
Do you offer wine tasting experiences at your wine estate?
Yes, we do. Best way to smoothly organize it to contact our manager Ms. Polgár, Kata via email.
Many expats have heard of Tokaj but are less familiar with Villány. How would you describe the region to someone considering their first visit?
Very simple. Our success is a proof that Villány wine region has the same, if not better high- end potential for red wines as the most renowned wine regions around the world: Bordeaux, Bolgheri, Duero Valley, Napa Valley. Villány is for red wine lovers ! ( Although Ms. Kövesdi proved her talent by making world – class Chardonnay in Villány, too. )

If someone could only try one Jammertal Wine Estate wine, which would you recommend, and what makes it special?
Every premium line wine of our estate ( Ars poetica, Cassiopeia and Koh – I – Noor ) is equally enjoyable. Everything depends on personal preferences. For someone who never met any of our wines, maybe the best choice would be the multiple award winner Cassiopeia MCS*Achird 2017. It is a sophisticated, easy – drinking yet very complex blend.
Looking ahead, what exciting developments or new projects can visitors look forward to at Jammertal Wine Estate?
This year we started our experiments – as pioneers in Hungary – with cast stone cement tanks both for aging and fermenting big reds. This method is already very popular among the leading wineries in Italy and the USA, but new to our area. It would allow the wines to develop full fruitiness.
