Xpat Interview: Ken Baines, Former-Headmaster, Britannica International School Budapest

Ken began his teaching career - many years ago he said with a warm smile - in England and was Deputy Headteacher of a comprehensive school in Lincolnshire before deciding to discover Africa. Ken has a wife, Sandra, three children and three grandchildren in England.
Other than family interests Ken still enjoys sport, particularly all things Leicester: cricket, rugby & soccer.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived in April 2010 in order to become Headmaster of Britannica International School.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
Yes, I have worked abroad since 1995 - in Cairo, Lagos, Amman and Port Harcourt.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent public transport system and how easy it is to get around.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
A weekend is not long enough! Basillica, Castle Area, local markets for fruit and vegetables, the Danube, local bars and restaurants and, of course, the Parliament building!
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
I enjoy Goulash and, occasionally, like to indulge in something less healthy, like pig's knuckle.
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
I enjoy a glass of beer in the evening. In Hungary, it is normally Dreher.
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Csókolom
8. What do you miss the most from home?
Family - children and grandchildren.
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
At my age it is pursued! I would have loved to play professional sport.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Sorting out the Euro crisis.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Croatia
12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Driving from Hungary to England and back.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Band was the Beatles, film was Love Story and hobby was playing sport.
14. What can't you resist?
Temptation.
15. Red wine or white?
Red
16. Book or movie?
Normally book
17. Morning person or night person?
Definitely morning!!
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Injustice & poverty
19. Buda side or Pest side?
Live on the Buda side but find Pest very interesting.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Never expect others to do what you would not try yourself.
