XpatLoop Interview: Balázs Benedek, SKAWA Innovation
Mr. Benedek is a natural born innovator, involved in the IT scene of Budapest. Started his career early by winning national and international Innovation/Sciene fairs between 1994-1996 (National Competition for Young Scientists, International Science and Engineering Fair, known today as Intel ISEF) with Braille Printer and next year with Braille Character Recognition, developed by his high-school friends.



Additionally, he was selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Person of Hungary by the Junior Chamber International (JCI TOYP) in 1996.

Between 2004-2006, he served the community as a member of the ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) Central Europe steering committee, and the vice president of the John von Neumann Computer Society (2004-2009).


1. Where did you grow up?

I was born in Szombathely, close to the Austrian border, but grew up in Budapest.

2. If you could be an expat anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Paris, with people speaking English :)

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
Thermal baths, pretty girls, best friends and family. Túró Rudi, kolbász, lecsó :)

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Winter: Széchenyi / Rudas, nice coffee, ice-skating, Take5 jazz pub
Summer: Castle hill, funicular, ruin pubs, dinner on a boat.

5. What is your favourite food?
Lecsó, no doubt.

6. What is your favourite sport / form of exercise?
Yoga for everyday, skiing during winter, scuba diving for the summer. Check out the Molnár János cave, that's a lifetime experience!

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
I just love Budapest for everyday life; especially if we include the neighbouring hills, forests and the Balaton :)

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Prince of Wales

9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?
Anything that's 9-to-5 :)

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
By the Balaton with my wife & 2 small daughters.

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
By some sea, once they're big enough to swim :)

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Queen! And Edda.

13. What can’t you resist?
Temptation

14. Red wine or white?
White for dinner, rose for the afternoon, red in the evening

15. Book or movie?
Movie for tonight, book for vacation

16. Morning person or night person?
Night if I could

17. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Racism, hatred.

18. Buda or Pest side?
Pest for the workdays, Buda for the weekends

19. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?
Founding the 24-hour International Programming Contest, which is still running.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
One for work, one for home:
“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”
"Plant a tree, write a book and have a baby"
