David Johnston, Former Head of Department, Cushman & Wakefield

Before joining Budapest David spent the previous four years working in Cushman & Wakefield’s National Office Agency Department based in Edinburgh, Scotland. David joined the Budapest Office Agency Department in September 2008.
David is a graduate of Aberdeen University, Scotland where he gained an MA (Hons) in Geography and then remained to undertake a Post Graduate degree in Land & Property Economics (MSc (Econ)) and a qualified Member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
August 2008 – just before the recession – I moved here for work from C&W Scotland to C&W Hungary.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I lived in Australia for 18 months before University – working on tomato & sheep farms. I love travelling especially around Asia, Europe & Kenya (despite my fear of flying!)
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
How hot it gets in the summer! The language took a little getting used to as well (still not 100% more like 10%!).
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Definitely go to Szecheyni furdo then Ket Szercsen for dinner before 360 bar & Simpla Kert for drinks afterwards
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Chicken Paprikas.
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Nice cold milk.
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Nagyon zene!
8. What do you miss the most from home?
Irn Bru!
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
A successful rock band manager. I used to be one in Scotland. Less the successful part.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Tax accountant.
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Croatia, Hvar island & Split.
12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
In Sweden (for my wedding to a Swede who I met in Budapest!)
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Nirvana and Kurt Cobain were definitely up there.
14. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?
A nice big bowl of chicken wings.

Red
16. Book or movie?
Book
17. Morning person or night person?
Night Person
18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Conservation and environmentalism. This is getting more and more important these days, we must become less neglectful & more proactive regards safeguarding the natural environment and our impact on it.
19. Buda side or Pest side?
Pest is best!
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
My family motto is ‘never unprepared’’ which suggests, at one time, we were caught VERY unprepared.
