Slovakia and Norwegian writer Jostein Gaarder will be the guests of honour at this year’s Budapest International Book Festival held between April 21 and 24, an organiser said. Slovakia will present the Hungarian edition of volumes by 30 Slovak authors released by 18 publishers, the director of the Slovak Literary Information Centre told a press conference.

Nobel laureate author Imre Kertész died at age 86 after a long and serious illness, the publisher Magvető said. The novelist, essayist and translator was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming a Nobel laureate in 2002.

Mayor István Tarlós promised on Tuesday that the annual Book Week event will be held on downtown Vörösmarty tér as usual. Last week’s reports that a city council committee wanted to move the event from Vörösmarty tér were based on a misunderstanding, Tarlós said.

A total of 329 new titles will be on show at the 86th annual Book Week, which begins on Thursday, Book Publishers and Distributors Association president László Péter Zentai, told reporters yesterday. More than 200 publishers from Hungary and other countries will be present at 147 booths on downtown Vörösmarty tér and the nearby Váci utca and Deák Ferenc utca.
