I went to the circus for the first time in ages this weekend – taking my family with me. We had great fun. The acts were good and there were no scary clowns! And the place was absolutely full so the atmosphere was excellent.

I helped offer a Christmas lunch to the least well-off in Budapest today. It was the best thing I’ve done since I arrived here. The Hungarian Interchurch Aid organisation ran the event, with support from local companies, and I went down with a small group from the Embassy to do what we could to contribute.

British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, visited Budapest on 4 October. He was here for a short time – just 5 working hours. But he was able in that time to open the Budapest Cyber Conference, have meetings with PM Orban and Foreign Minister Martonyi, and do a TV interview and a press conference. An impressive pace. And the trip went very smoothly.

On 13 August Chargé d’Affairs Theresa Bubbear co-opened the Olympic exhibition of the Hungarian Jewish Museum. In the year of the London Olympic Games, the exhibition honours the achievements of both known and less known former Hungarian Jewish Olympic champions. In her speech Mrs Bubbear congratulated for the achievements of the former champions, the relatives of many took part in the opening.

Team GB might not have won any medals on 8 August (although we were very happy to see Hungary doing so well), but for me it was a day of firsts: Day 1 of the Festival was also the first anniversary of my arrival in Budapest and I made my first visit to the Sziget Festival and my first speech in Hungarian.
