Hungarian liberal weekly news magazine 168 óra asked eight members of Hungary’s liberal establishment their reaction to the Fidesz-KDNP landslide victory in Sunday’s local and county elections. Their responses appear in the article “Új Baldoldal Kell!” (A new left-wing is needed!) appearing in the 16 October 2014 edition (pp. 12-15). Our unabridged translation of the article follows:

Let me summarize what we know so far about the U.S. action against certain Hungarian businessmen and government employees. Initially it was reported that ten people were banned from entering the United States, but by now that number has been reduced to six. We definitely know of one businessman who reported on his fate to ATV.
Public Protests Start As Tax On Internet Traffic Planned In Hungary

According to the bill prepared by the governing party, every single gigabyte of started download will cost internet service providers HUF 150 (USD 0.62). The tax, planned to be introduced from January 2015, would mean an almost unbearable burden for internet service providers, and would be passed to every single internet user in the country as an extra charge.

Being born and raised in Southern California I am often asked, what are you doing here in Budapest? The question is not so much of what bothers me rather the tone from the interrogator; one that implies that California is a dreamland and Budapest is, well, the opposite. I couldn’t disagree with this sentiment more.
