Hungary's 2nd City Adopts Integrated Public Transport Fare System

Debrecen will adopt an integrated fare system for public transportation, similar to the one in Budapest, under an agreement signed on Tuesday, Construction and Transportation Minister Janos Lazar said at a press conference in the city, Hungary's second largest.

The system, to enter force on December 14, will allow pass holders for Volan buses and MAV trains to use the services of municipal transport company DKV, Lazar said. He added that the measure would save residents HUF 5,000-10,000 a month on travel costs.

He noted that students, who paid HUF 5,500 for a monthly DKV pass until now, could purchase an integrated county pass for local and regional transport for just HUF 945.

He said the MAV-Volan group would pay HUF 3.4bn in compensation to Debrecen for the resulting shortfall in revenue.
