Today’s topic is the Hungarian police’s decision not to investigate the attack on a Roma family in Devecser, one of the villages that earlier fell victim to the red sludge that covered acres and acres of land around a factory producing aluminum. I didn’t deal with this specific incident except as one in a series of anti-Roma attacks by far-right groups during the summer of 2012.

Hungary has been cracking down on its homeless people. Cities now have a law saying they can define areas where they aren't allowed to stay, such as parks, playgrounds, or underpasses. Those who refuse to move on can be sentenced to public service work, fined or put in prison. Civil society groups say the government is criminalising vagrancy and not dealing with the root causes.

An average of 15,000-16,000 guests have visited the café on Vörösmarty tér, and close to 20,000 in April. In general, half of the guests are foreign and half are Hungarian.
