In the lawsuit, 78 claimants sought a total of Ft 4.3 billion.
In awarding Ft 1.8 billion, the court ordered Viking Cruises AG and Panorama Deck to disburse sums ranging from Ft 5 million to Ft 80 million within 15 days.
The judge rejected the argument that the Hableány had a “duty of evasion” to the larger Viking Sigyn, which rammed the smaller vessel, causing it to overturn in seconds.
Even the existence of a duty of evasion would not be an excuse for a large ship to sail as if there was no smaller ship in front of it and run over it, the judge declared, adding that the Hableány was not in a fit condition to sail on that night.
In a criminal trial last September, a court sentenced the captain of the Sigyn to five and a half years in prison for reckless endangerment of waterway traffic.
The accident occurred on May 29, 2019, when the Sigyn collided with and sank the Hableány cruise ship near the Margaret Bridge in Budapest, resulting in 27 fatalities among the 33 South Korean tourists and two Hungarians on board.
