Budapest Pride Festival began on 3 July with the official opening ceremony! This year’s motto "Empowered by 20 years” allows us take a look back at the past two decades of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) tradtions, and refers to the power of the community, its (self) organization and presence, which can be the only way to achieve equal rights and social justice.

Actor and director Róbert Alföldi opened the Budapest Pride Festival for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer community on Friday evening at the Holdudvar club on Margaret Island. Cultural, artistic and public affairs programmes are scheduled for the week-long festival, culminating in the annual parade next Saturday.

The Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) has published images of the first Solaris-Skoda trolley bus that has arrived to the capital, which will be followed by a fleet of further 20 single-unit and 16 articulated vehicles to serve District XIV and the city centre. The increased number of low-floor vehicles is meant to improve accessibility on the routes, BKK writes.

Radical nationalist Jobbik has repeatedly called for a public debate and a national referendum on the death penalty, party leader Gábor Vona told public TV news channel M1. Although Roman Catholic he would say “yes” to restoring death penalty in a referendum, he said. “It must be decided what is more important: a couple of international agreements, or the life of Hungarian people,” Vona said.
