Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called for a “firm increase” in wages in the Hungarian economy, which he said required increasingly competitive businesses. Addressing a conference organised by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Budapest, Orbán said that reducing corporate and personal income taxes as well as employer contributions were necessary to enhance competitiveness.

Efforts to remove a bomb found in the Danube near Rákóczi híd were suspended overnight, the Armed Forces announced on Wednesday. An industrial diver discovered a bomb on Tuesday as he was cleaning sewerage, but its position was not marked with buoys.

The National Food Safety Office (Nébih) detected a bird flu outbreak at a turkey farm in Békés County in southeast Hungary, the farm ministry said. All 9,000 turkeys at the farm are to be culled in an effort to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
