Hungary Urged to Act Quickly on AI to Avoid Falling Behind
Laszlo Palkovics, the government commissioner for artificial intelligence, pointed to the untapped potential of AI and pressed for action to address the related technology challenges at a workshop hosted by the National Bank of Hungary (NBH).

If Hungary fails to take immediate steps, Palkovics said the country would miss out on the chance to create applications, structure data or influence the operation of big data centres.

He pointed to "intensive" work on AI at local research centres and said the regulatory environment needed to facilitate those activities. With the right regulatory and testing environment, foreign companies could patent their inventions in Hungary, he added.

Palkovics said the government would call a tender by year-end for HUF 73bn in support for early-stage companies working on AI. Another HUF 50bn tender could be called later, he added.

He said instruction in AI at local universities was being expanded, and AI course materials would be introduced at vocational schools from the end of October, on a trial basis. He recommended starting instruction in AI in secondary schools from February and in primary schools from next September.

NBH governor Mihaly Varga urged a coordinated effort by state and market actors to support the application of AI. He added that the EU's position was "weak" with regard to technology investments and warned that it would have trouble catching up.

Varga said Hungary couldn't afford to miss AI's early adoption stage, adding that education needed to ready people to use AI, the state had to take on the role of flexible guide and businesses should recognise the potential of AI.
