The Hungarian government has been actively recruiting new citizens from the neighboring countries, presumably to add to their vote total at the next national election. In order to be eligible for citizenship a person must have at least one ancestor who was a Hungarian citizen. He must also have some knowledge of the Hungarian language.

Lately I have been struck by the high number of incidents, often resulting in death, involving relatives or people living in the same household. A daughter kills her mother, an 85-year-old former high-ranking police officer kills his 79-year-old wife, a professional soccer player kills his partner and her son in a family dispute. These are only three cases I remember from the last two weeks or so.

The amount of state funding for culture will rise by 17 billion forints (EUR 57m) next year, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated in Hódmezővásárhely, on Sunday. Culture has received more attention and more money in the past years, in spite of the economic crisis, he said at the opening of an annual exhibition of handicrafts in the city.
