Surprising City in Hungary Makes Time Out's Cheapest & Best European Destinations List for 2026
- 15 Jan 2026 8:00 AM
The ranking highlights cities that offer strong value for money, a vibrant cultural scene and high liveability — positioning them as appealing alternatives to Europe’s increasingly crowded tourist hubs.
Miskolc is the only Hungarian city to make the list, ranking ahead of well-known destinations such as Zagreb, Kraków and Graz.
A changing city at the edge of the Bükk Mountains
Located at the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, Miskolc has undergone a notable transformation in recent years. According to Time Out, it has developed into one of Hungary’s most versatile urban destinations, combining a compact city centre with extensive green spaces and easy access to nature.
The magazine describes Miskolc as a liveable, environmentally conscious city where urban life blends naturally with outdoor experiences.
Where city life meets nature and wellness
Miskolc’s appeal lies in its diversity. The city offers a long-established spa culture, strong gastronomy, centuries-old heritage and a growing focus on eco- and active tourism. Together, these create a destination that works equally well for short city breaks, outdoor enthusiasts and wellness travellers.
Modern public transport makes getting around easy. A well-developed tram network and efficient bus services connect the railway station, city centre and surrounding natural attractions, making Miskolc particularly convenient for visitors arriving by train or travelling without a car.
Lillafüred and the Bükk region
One of the city’s most popular nearby destinations is Miskolc–Lillafüred, set in the heart of the Bükk Mountains. Highlights include Lake Hámori, the Szinva Waterfall, the chairlift, the Zsófia Lookout Tower and a network of scenic hiking trails. The area offers striking landscapes and easy day-trip options, while remaining largely free from mass tourism.
Spa culture and year-round leisure in Miskolctapolca
Another key attraction is Miskolctapolca, known for its spa tradition and outdoor leisure facilities. Visitors can combine relaxation at the cave baths and the Ellipsum Experience Bath with activities such as boating, bobsleigh, go-karting and the local adventure park. Together, these give Miskolc a year-round appeal that sets it apart from many European city-break destinations.
Europe’s most beautiful Advent tram — again
Miskolc is also known for its distinctive Advent tram, which runs during the Christmas season. The festively decorated tram has recently won the title of Europe’s Most Beautiful Advent Tram for the ninth time, reinforcing the city’s reputation for creativity and seasonal charm.
A rising gastronomic destination
The city is steadily gaining recognition on Hungary’s culinary map. Miskolc is home to three Michelin-recommended restaurants and, according to the Street Kitchen Guide, has the second-highest number of top-quality recommended restaurants in Hungary after Budapest.
Major food events include the well-known Kocsonya (Aspic) Festival every February and the Avasi Wine Walk in May. From spring to autumn, the Edible Forest and Forest Gastro Express programme combines gastronomy, hiking and sustainable tourism in the Bükk region.
Sustainability in the international spotlight
The Edible Forest and Forest Gastro Express initiative is currently a finalist in an international competition organised by Green Destinations, recognising some of the world’s most innovative sustainable tourism projects. The awards ceremony will take place in Berlin this March.
The wider Bükk region also holds UNESCO Global Geopark status — a rare international designation that highlights its outstanding geological and natural value.
A destination beyond mass tourism
Time Out’s recommendation places Miskolc among a growing group of European cities focused on meaningful experiences, strong local identity and balanced value for money. It is presented as a destination that has so far avoided mass tourism, making it an appealing choice for travellers — and Hungary-based expats — looking for something different.
