Budapest Olympics Could Cost Up To HUF 5000bn

The costs of the planned Budapest Olympics could be on a par with those of the enlargement of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, the weekly HVG has claimed. According to the paper, Hungary would have to rake out as much as HUF 4-5000 billion if it wins the right to organise the 2024 Summer Olympics, in stark contrast to the government’s HUF 774 billion cost estimate.

Hungarian contestant Anita Márton came first in the female shot put event at an athletics competition held in the Japanese capital Tokyo on Sunday. Ms. Márton, who is female indoor European Champion in the event, won with an extraordinary, 18.94 metre throw, beating American Brittany Smith by 33 centimetres.

A male and a female kayaker have had their membership in the Hungarian national team suspended after a drug test conducted at a training camp in Dunavarsány, south of Budapest, revealed that the two had been taking cocaine. Destillata, the largest-scale European competition of fruit brandys (pálinka), liquors, whiskies and other spirits, came to a close with outstanding Hungarian success. This was the 23rd occasion the most prestigious Central European championship of distilleries was held.
