Today, while some of these fancy residences of bygone eras are in ruins, and some are home to museums, some have been turned into wonderful castle hotels.

The history of the Baroque castle started in 1735 when construction began on order of Antal I Grassalkovich, a confidant of Maria Theresa. By 1745, the first U-shaped building enclosing the inner courtyard was finished, along with the banquet hall and royal suites.

The Gödöllő International Harp Festival which is twenty years old this year returns to the beautiful setting of the Royal Palace, as well as the Great Hall of the Academy of Music.

The most famous sight of the town, 30 km from Budapest, is the Grassalkovich Palace, the largest in Hungary. Maria Theresa stayed here several times, and it was the favourite home of Queen Elisabeth (Sissy) in the 19th century. Restoration is underway, but several wings are already open to the public.
