SUP Festival – Paddle Through Budapest on the Danube, 4 July
If you are looking for an unusual outdoor activity in the capital this summer, the 11th Budapest SUP Festival offers a rare opportunity to traverse the city from a completely different perspective.

Taking place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, this event stands as Hungary’s largest community stand-up paddleboarding gathering, allowing hundreds of participants to paddle directly down the main branch of the Danube River.

The festival is designed to accommodate all skill levels, ranging from experienced paddlers to absolute beginners.

With an expected turnout of nearly 400 participants gliding through the heart of the city, it provides a highly scenic and social morning on the water, far removed from the standard sightseeing routes.

The 16-Kilometre River Route

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) involves standing on a wide, buoyant board and using a single long paddle for propulsion.

The festival organizes this pastime into a coordinated, half-day group excursion covering approximately 16 kilometres of the Danube.

Participants launch from the northern riverbanks of Római Part and travel south with the gentle river current, finishing at the protected Kopaszi-gát Bay.

The route takes paddlers beneath every major historic bridge in Budapest and directly past the Hungarian Parliament building, offering unique vantage points for photography. Professional photographers and videographers track the group from the shores, support boats, and drones throughout the journey.

Event Schedule at a Glance

The organizers maintain a strict timeline to coordinate safely with river traffic. The morning itinerary is structured as follows:

8:00 AM: Registration opens at the starting point (Duna Café Grill and Drink Bar, Római Part).
9:00 AM: Arrival deadline for participants who are renting SUP boards on-site.
10:00 AM: Registration deadline for participants bringing their own equipment.
10:20 AM: Final closure of all registration desks.
10:45 AM: Mandatory safety and navigation briefing for all paddlers.
11:00 AM: Official start (all participants must be on the water).
1:20 PM – 2:00 PM: Group arrival at Kopaszi-gát Bay, docking behind Café Ponyvaregény.
3:00 PM: Return shuttle bus departs back to Római Part for pre-registered riders.

⚠️ Weather Contingency: In the event of lightning or severe windstorms, the backup rain date is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, 2026. Light summer rain will not delay or cancel the paddle.

First-Time Paddlers Welcome

Prior experience with stand-up paddleboarding is not a prerequisite for entry. The festival includes introductory group lessons alongside the mandatory pre-launch briefing, ensuring that beginners can establish their balance confidently.

Because the stable, wide design of modern boards makes finding your footing relatively simple and the natural flow of the Danube assists with forward momentum, first-time participants generally navigate the distance without issue.

Equipment rentals are available for those who do not own a board, though advanced online booking is highly recommended as rental fleets book out ahead of the weekend.

Essential Safety Regulations

Because the Danube is a highly active, commercial shipping lane, safety protocols are strictly enforced by the organizers and the local water police.

All participants must adhere to the following rules:

Mandatory Life Jackets: Every participant must wear a life jacket. You must bring your own or arrange a rental in advance from the kayak houses along the riverbank. Paddling without a vest is strictly prohibited.

Official Wristbands: Access to the water requires an official event wristband, distributed at check-in following fee payment. The water police monitor the route and will remove unregistered paddlers.

Liability Waivers: A standard liability waiver must be signed by every participant at the Római Part starting desk.

River Restrictions: Swimming in the Danube is strictly forbidden during the event. Furthermore, paddlers must never overtake the lead safety motorboat and must maintain a wide berth from all stationary or moving commercial vessels.

Board Capacity: A maximum of two individuals are permitted per board (either two adults, or one adult and one child). Children under the age of 10 can participate free of charge.

Sobriety: The consumption of alcohol or any other controlled substances before or during the paddle is completely prohibited.

Personal Protection: Given the hours spent under direct sunlight, high-factor sunscreen, a hat, and an ample supply of drinking water are strongly advised.
