Ride Retro Buses & More During Budapest’s Nostalgia Transport Month
- 11 Jun 2026 9:25 AM
According to a joint announcement from the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) and the Budapest Transport Company (BKV), the early summer schedule will feature an array of vintage trams, trolleybuses, buses, and historic Cogwheel Railway cars, showcasing over a century of urban public transport heritage.
A major highlight of the weekend schedule includes the open-top Ikarus cabrio bus, which will operate on the N109 route on Saturday.
Originally manufactured more than fifty years ago for service in East Germany, the vehicle underwent a comprehensive conversion into a sightseeing cabriolet in 2017.
Simultaneously, rail enthusiasts can experience the historic BVVV L-type tram along the scenic Pest embankment on the N2 route.
First introduced to the city streets in 1913, this model will run alongside the distinctive bidirectional Bengáli articulated tram and the legendary tramcar No. 1820, a staple of Budapest's transit network from the early twentieth century until its retirement in the 1970s.
On Sunday, the focus shifts to the Buda side of the Danube, where the riverside N19 route will host a meticulously restored tram dating back to 1908.
In addition, an ivory-and-cherry-red variant of the Bengáli tram will service the N18 line connecting Szent János Hospital and Csóka Street, while the N4 nostalgia bus route deploys a classic mid-century Ikarus model.
The vintage rollouts will continue dynamically throughout the month.
On June 20, the 1939-built tram No. 1522 will make a special appearance on the N2 line.
This particular model is technically notable for its complete lack of a modern air-brake system, relying instead on manual electric braking and a traditional ratchet handbrake.
The upcoming Night of the Museums will feature a dedicated program of heritage lines, including the N36 tram running between Keleti Railway Station and Kápolna Street to transport visitors directly to the Hungarian Transport Museum’s temporary exhibition at the Eiffel Workshop.
Classic buses and trolleybuses will also join the late-night rotation, highlighted by the historic Ikarus 60 bus on the central N1 route.
Due to the strict heritage preservation and structural constraints of the Ikarus 60 bus and the Ikarus 60T trolleybus, capacity will be strictly limited to twenty-one seated passengers at any given time, with tickets sold directly by coordinators at the boarding points.
Later in the month, on June 24, the Budapest Cogwheel Railway will commemorate its 152nd anniversary. To mark the milestone, a historic green trailer car originally manufactured in Vienna will operate excursions between Városmajor and Széchenyi Hill.
Over its century and a half of operation, the scenic line has carried generations of passengers, including the celebrated Hungarian novelist Mór Jókai.
The month-long program concludes on the final weekend of June with appearances by the articulated Bengáli tram on June 28, followed by the 119-year-old S-type tram No. 1820 returning to the N19 riverside tracks on June 29.
The N4 vintage bus will also remain active through the final days of the month, providing a classic transit link for passengers heading out toward the Zugliget Chairlift.
Fares for the nostalgia network can be purchased in advance via the official BudapestGO mobile application, at physical BKK customer service centers and ticket offices, or directly from the conductors on board the vehicles, where international card payments are fully accepted.
