Hungary’s hospitals performed a total 497 organ transplants last year, the head of the Hungarian Transplant Association said. Edit Szederkényi said that the operations included 343 kidney transplants, 89 liver, 51 heart and 13 combined kidney and pancreas transplants, as well as the first lung transplant in Hungary at the end of the year.

The Hungarian government is working on solving the shortage of labour, which is becoming an increasing problem in certain sectors and professions in the country, by “importing” skilled guest workers to Hungary from countries outside the EU but this will not cause any Hungarians to lose their jobs, the Minister for National Economy has said.

The government has reached an agreement with health-care unions on raising base salaries in the sector starting in September this year, the human resources minister announced on Thursday. The base salary of doctors and pharmacists will increase by gross 107,000 forints (EUR 344) from September 1 this year and by another 100,000 forints from November 1, 2017, Zoltán Balog told a press conference.

St. Margit Hospital in Budapest has launched an “adopt a ward” scheme, seeking help or financial support for the building’s refurbishment, the daily Népszabadság reports. The hospital which has 256 active beds and 31 outpatient departments is seeking the refurbishment of its entire intensive care unit, cardiology department and several wards and bathrooms in other departments.
